Digital Transformation - making it real, for real users!

This is a true story. And I like simple stories. So, I was on my annual doctors visit 'to get stuff done' while being on #COVIDvacation just a couple of days ago, when my doctor said:

  1. Next time we can do a ‘Teams call’ if I am comfortable with it,

  2. He conducted a real-time chat with a front office nurse to schedule a test for me in a different facility right then,

  3. Transmitted my reports to another doctor instantly while pulling his profile on a big screen TV so that I get to know him a bit better before I go see him,

  4. Compared and showed trends of key health numbers visually, for last 5+ years building a rationale around the future course of action,

All the while, sharing my health chart line-by-line to make sure we do not miss a thing beyond the questions I have for him. Not to say giving me plenty of opportunities to bust the medical lingo as I digested the results, diagnosis, and the acronyms. When things happen and work in front of you, you know #digitaltransformation is not a buzz word anymore but it is very much here and kicking in high gear more than ever. Thanks to #COVIDmarathon.

All of the above ‘may’ sound simple and obvious, but to make it happen in real life, real-time, in front of a real patient, you have to have reliable and unified current and historical data sets, connected systems across healthcare facilities, collaboration software that integrates scheduling systems and planners, advanced search capabilities to name a few, including rooms equipped with devices that remove technical finagling while intimate doctor-patient dialogue is happening. And last but not least, the doctor himself has to be ready for this technology change and be willing to experiment and learn from the experience on the go.

What is the benefit you may ask? A confidant and happy patient walking out of the doctor’s office. The goal of every business: ultimate user satisfaction and engagement. Of course, we can very well dissect the situation and say:

  • It is all about data-driven decision making and data integration.

  • Real-time communication planning and scheduling helping efficiency improvements.

  • Real-time collaboration with healthcare staff, patients, facilities remaining within HIPPA laws.

Yeah, we can say all of that and maybe even more, but in my mind 'the feeling’ of ‘that was nice’ trumps all those data analytics and concrete KPI’s so to speak.

Any type of transformation, digital in this case, is not some mind-boggling and complicated 'futuristic thing’ that helps some select few people, but something that helps at the grassroots level and transforms and optimizes (aka saves time, money, or efforts) processes and reimagines how they can be more fulfilling, efficient and satisfying to the end-user.

Can we talk about #digitaltransformation in more human terms? Can we make it #reallifestories than some KPI dashboard for a CEO, CIO, or CXO?

I always get fascinated with simple things that make a huge difference! My last doctors' visit was one of them. #digitaltransformation #simplified!
